Chris Fiebrich, Ph.D.

Chris is the Director of the Oklahoma Climatological Survey (OCS) at the University of Oklahoma. The OCS is the nation's largest state climate office. The Survey’s mission includes the acquisition and dissemination of all climate and weather information to policy and decision makers in the state, and to act as the representative of the state in all climatological and meteorological matters.

Chris is also a Professor with the School of Meteorology at OU. HIs areas of expertise are in mesoscale meteorology and climatology, meteorological instrumentation, and applied meteorology and climatology.

Current Research Projects

Exploring Compound Events at the Mesoscale Using the Oklahoma Mesonet Archive

Working with Graduate Research Assistant Frank Vazzano on an analysis of over 30 years of high-resolution mesoscale data across Oklahoma to gain knowledge of the mechanisms by which modulators, drivers, hazards, and impacts are related during compound weather and climate events across the Southern Great Plains.

Assessment of the Value and Usage of National Mesonet Program Data to NOAA

Evaluation of the impact and integration of datasets provided through the National Mesonet Program (NMP) within National Weather Service (NWS) operations. Specifically, the project aims to determine how NMP data are used in forecast discussions, weather warnings, local storm reports, and other operational products, and to identify patterns of attribution and regional variability in their use.

Understanding State Agency Needs for NOAA Climate Information

Working with state agency leaders to understand their needs for climate information and to make NOAA climate data available to ensure their climate-related decisions are based on authoritative data.

Operation of the USDA Little Washita and Fort Cobb Micronets

Assist with the oversight of the operation and maintenance of 35 observing stations across the Little Washita and Fort Cobb Watersheds across Oklahoma. Consult with the ARS in planning to deliver quality-assured data from these micronet networks to the USDA.

NSF E-RISE: Center for Grassland Ecosystem Forecasting

Integrating uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) with the Oklahoma Mesonet ground network to capture real-time, three-dimensional atmospheric data.

Developing and validating temperature-sensitive planning approaches that improve load forecasting and support targeted reliability investments for electric cooperatives across the region.

Advancing the science, management, and conservation of grassland ecosystems in Oklahoma, the United States, and globally.

W/V Band Data Collection for the Air Force Research Laboratory

Working with Blue Halo and the Air Force Research Laboratory to setup a data collection ground terminal to measure beacon signals, in addition to a radiometer, disdrometer, and weather sensors at the Kessler Atmospheric and Ecological Field Station.
